Meet the Unicorn: a simple game on a single sheet of paper

A simple game on a single sheet of paper

I designed this game for an assignment from the “Introduction to Game Design” course at California Institute of the Arts.

The starting point of the assignment had some rules

  • Make a simple game on a single sheet of paper.

  • The game should include a clear goal, and a degree of difficulty enhanced by chance or skill.

  • The game should be a one-player game that fits on one piece of paper, ideally A4 so people can print it out if they wish.

  • Instructions should be at the top of the page, and the only extra thing anyone should need to play is two six-sided dice.

Throughout the weeks we had more assignments to improve the game; adding narratives, some additional mechanisms, turning the game into a multiplayer one, enhancing balance, adding some NPCs etc.
