NOCS Provisions – Logo Animation
Role: Motion Designer
Client & Tasks
The focal point of this project was crafting a logo animation for NOCS Provisions binoculars to use as an intro and outro for future video content.
Challenge
The biggest challenge was to reveal the concept of the abstract logo element with animation. It is based on how the setting sun looks on the horizon, especially in San Fransisco, where it is humid and makes the sunset look distorted or with lines. Also, it sometimes causes the "green flash" phenomenon that happens when the sun is setting.
Solution
Following an initial discussion with the client, I sketched out a basic idea of the animation: view through binoculars, distorting the sun right on the horizon line and merging its distorted lines with the waves, and then the final logo is revealed.
We underwent four iterations, experimenting with different elements and characters and refining the animation to perfection.
Final deliverables
Upon approval of the final version, I rendered the animation in four different formats and resolutions (MOV and MP4, transparent and black&white), ensuring its adaptability for versatile applications. The completed work was delivered via Dropbox.
The Client's Cut:
As we tinkered with different versions, we crafted a considerably lengthier one (11 sec) that I really enjoyed.
However, the client needed to keep the animation within a 7-second timeframe. Consequently, we had to trim down the sequence by removing certain objects and finalizing the 6-second animation.
Later, the animation was used as an ender in the product videos on Amazon and the brand's YouTube channel.
The Director's Cut:
While wrapping up the main version for the client, I saved the pre-final version's copy for future refinement and put together a director's cut (forgive the fancy words here 😀).
The director's cut included all the objects from the pre-final iteration refined: such as the pelican and the dolphin, along with a few subtle sound effects.
