Exodus

A spring chapel series design for Hope College.

This has been a fascinating project to dive into - in part because the book is so chock-full of vivid, complicated, & honestly, troubling stories. There's a lot to wrestle with. I've been grateful for the creative space to vet questions and concerns and even more grateful for the work of those helping interpret and contextualize this ancient text.

For teaching purposes at the college, we wanted to think of Exodus in three parts:

  • Slavery & Deliverance

  • Covenant & Law

  • Worship & Presence

Out of that spirit, the design is constructed as a triptych, with the leftmost portion representing the early life of Moses & the escape from Egypt, the rightmost portion representing God's covenant & the Ten Commandments, and the center portion representing the instructions for the tabernacle & the arc of the covenant.

Stylistically, I wanted the visuals to have a hieroglyphic quality to them, vaguely contextualizing them in history & also because of the narrative quality that can accompany simple, stripped back imagery.
