And Tango Makes Three — Character Style Exploration

When you are illustrating a children’s book there are so many takeaways when it comes to the visual style and design of its characters. For example, in “And Tango Makes Three” I did these three different style approaches for Roy and Tango, with the idea that based on the one that worked the best I would create Silo afterwards… funny thing is that I ended up mixing all the three approaches to create the character design.

I picked Tango from slide 1 and Roy from slide 2 because I really liked the way Tango looked so fluffy and cute (just like a small ball of feathers, but then I decided to add flippers), and that the Roy stylization was quite accurate to how chinstrap penguins look in real life… and then Roy from slide 3 helped me to create a hunky version of a penguin, which ended up being Silo. And that’s how this peculiar family was created.
