‘해님 달밈’ Sun and Moon Traditional Korean Fable Story

‘해님 달밈’The story of how the sun and the moon came to be. A single mother crossed villages to work and get food (떡) for her two children, but on the way back, a tiger wanted to eat her. For her safe return she offered the food instead for her life. Ultimately the tiger still ate her. It took her clothes and in the same fashion as the wolf in little red riding hood, it took her clothes to get the children. The children caught on, climbed a tree, and escaping the tiger prayed for help, and from the heavens, a rope was sent down for them to climb. The tiger with its greed, did the same but a tattered rope was sent down instead, and at the peak of its climb the rope snapped and dropped the tiger to its death. The children reached the heavens, the young daugher became the sun and the son became the moon. My ma told this story to me as a child (maybe 5yo) and whatever lesson it was supposed to instil, the thought of ma being eaten was all that stuck in my head, even when the tiger agreed. These damn fables of old are pretty grim and dark. This could be wrong, but my recollection of the story was that the tiger appeared multiple times and the mom even offered her arms in turn to tend for the kids. Anyways… this is my version of the story with the kids taking part in the retribution.
