Design Process

I led the design development of TravelHealth, a healthcare booking platform for professionals who travel frequently. The objective was to create a platform that allows users to schedule and manage healthcare services such as massages, chiropractic sessions, and medical appointments. Special attention was given to make the app accessible to users with different abilities and levels of tech experience.

Market research was essential to understand trends, competitors, and preferences of the target audience. User research was also conducted to identify challenges faced by traveling professionals in accessing healthcare services. The result was a user interface designed for ease of navigation and use, facilitating the booking and management of healthcare services for users on the move.

User Research

For TravelHealth, the user research primarily involved conducting interviews with traveling professionals to understand their healthcare service needs during travel. The findings revealed several key insights:

  • In-Demand Services: Traveling professionals frequently seek services like massage therapy and chiropractic care while traveling. Although visits to doctors or dentists are typically scheduled during non-travel times, there is an interest in these services being more accessible during travel.

  • Service Location Process: Professionals often depend on online reviews, hotel recommendations, or local advice to locate healthcare service providers in new destinations. A recurring concern is the absence of a reliable and uniform network of providers across different locations.

  • Service Quality: The emphasis is on high-quality services with a focus on hygiene and professionalism. Due to the unpredictable nature of travel schedules, flexibility in booking appointments is highly valued.

  • Additional Services: Services such as nutrition guidance, sleep therapy, personal training, and mindfulness coaching are identified as potentially beneficial additions. These services cater to the holistic health needs of traveling professionals.

  • Mode of Service Delivery: For services like mental health consultation, nutrition advice, and sleep therapy, there is a preference for phone or digital consultations. This indicates an openness towards telehealth or digital consultations as a convenient alternative to in-person sessions.

  • Category Classification: The research categorized the services into three main areas:

    • General Health: Doctor, Dentist

    • Mental Health: Sleep Therapist, Mental Health Therapist, Mindfulness Coach

    • Physical Health: Physical Trainer, Masseuse, Nutrition Specialist

Conclusion: The research indicates that while traveling professionals typically manage their healthcare needs during non-travel periods, there is a significant interest in having a more flexible, reliable, and extensive network of quality health service providers available during travel.

Market Research

In the course of developing TravelHealth, comprehensive market research was undertaken to assess current trends, the competitive landscape, and preferences of the target audience, namely traveling professionals. This research revealed a rising demand for accessible healthcare services among individuals who frequently travel for work. Such professionals seek convenient, dependable, and quality healthcare services that can adapt to their mobile lifestyle.

The research identified a notable gap in the market: While there are services available, they often lack a consistent and trusted network, especially in varied travel destinations. Professionals currently rely on disparate sources such as online reviews, hotel recommendations, or local advice, which highlights the demand for a unified platform that offers vetted and reliable healthcare services.

Although there are existing healthcare services and platforms, the market shows potential for an innovative service like TravelHealth that can provide a more integrated, flexible, and quality-oriented healthcare experience for travellers. This opportunity is underscored by the fact that no single player currently dominates this niche, particularly for a platform that caters specifically to the needs of traveling professionals and offers a wide range of services from general to specialized healthcare

Persona: The Traveling Consultant

The ideal user for TravelHealth is a consultant who frequently travels for work. This individual values efficiency and reliability in services due to their busy and unpredictable schedule. They are health-conscious and understand the importance of maintaining their physical and mental well-being, especially while on the road.

This consultant is likely to be technologically proficient and prefers using an app that is straightforward and visually streamlined. They seek a platform that allows them to effortlessly book, manage, and access healthcare services, such as massage therapy, chiropractic care, or a quick dental check-up, irrespective of their location.

User Flow

In crafting the user flow for TravelHealth, I focused on understanding and addressing the goals and challenges of our primary users – traveling professionals. The aim was to provide a fluid and intuitive experience. The design included essential elements to ensure this:

  • Service Discovery: The app allows users to effortlessly find the specific healthcare service they need, such as massage therapy, chiropractic care, or a medical consultation. This is facilitated through an easily navigable interface, tailored to their current location and preferences.

  • Practitioner Selection: Once a service is chosen, users can then select their preferred practitioner. The app provides detailed profiles, including qualifications, reviews, and availability, enabling users to make informed choices.

  • Appointment Booking: With a practitioner selected, users can then book their appointment. The app's design simplifies this process, allowing users to choose a date and time that fits their travel schedule.

  • Payment Process: Finally, the app facilitates a secure and straightforward payment process for the booked appointment, completing the user's journey through the app.

Moodboard

The creation of the moodboard was a crucial step in the design process of TravelHealth. It served as a source of inspiration, guiding the overall look and feel of the app. Drawing from various visual elements, it helped shape the design direction, ensuring that the user interface aligns with the vision of providing a seamless experience for our users. This moodboard was instrumental in sparking creative ideas and establishing the aesthetic framework for TravelHealth.

Wireframes

The development of wireframes began with a detailed mapping of the user flow specific to TravelHealth. Key screens identified for the design included the landing page, service selection page, practitioner profile page, appointment booking page, and payment confirmation page. Each screen was crafted with the user's journey in mind, from finding a service to completing a payment.

The wireframes emphasized the following crucial elements: a clear listing of healthcare services, detailed profiles for healthcare practitioners, a straightforward appointment scheduling system, and a secure payment process. This approach ensured that the design remained focused on the app's core functionality.

Visual Design

To refine the design direction for TravelHealth, multiple iterations of the screens were created, exploring various concepts to finalize the prototype. User feedback was integral throughout this process, ensuring the designs remained attuned to user needs.

A focal point in the initial visual exploration was the healthcare provider profile screen. This screen is pivotal as it presents essential information such as the provider's qualifications and experience, aiding users in making well-informed choices regarding their healthcare services. This screen also incorporates numerous design elements used across the app, such as color schemes, typography, and overall visual style, making it an ideal candidate for initial testing and refinement.

Another crucial aspect of the visual design was the map integration. This feature allows users to discover available services in their current location or planned destinations. The map interface was meticulously designed to be both functional and visually harmonious with the app's overall aesthetic, ensuring a seamless user experience from discovery to booking.

Prototyping

Developing a high-fidelity interactive prototype was key in confirming the effectiveness of my designs. With a background as an App Developer, I understand the importance of establishing clear and detailed designs prior to initiating the development of the app.

Feedback and Testing

Gathering feedback continuously is important for improving the app after completing the design. To ensure TravelHealth meets user expectations, feedback was collected on different aspects of the app's interface and interactions.

Feedback highlighted two aspects of the user experience that received positive responses. These aspects were then used as a basis for the app's design development. Two design variations were created, focusing on these user experience elements. Further feedback on these variations was gathered to ensure the design met user needs and expectations.

Outcomes

Wireframing was key in TravelHealth’s development, offering an early blueprint for the app’s structure and user flow. This stage helped identify and address usability issues efficiently. The moodboard also played a crucial role, sparking creativity in UI design and influencing the visual direction. Together, these processes contributed to a user-centered design, leading to a successful launch and positive reception.
