Steam Store Homepage ⏲ Quick Fix
The problem
Developed in the early 2000’s and considered to be the go to digital distribution service and storefront for video games on computers. Steam has visually changed very little since the early 2010’s - making it appear dated and feel very clunky, especially when compared to its peers.
Having personally used the service since 2012, one of the pages I actively avoid is the homepage of the store. These are some of the issues I have identified:
A dated visual style, making the experience feel cheap and un-Immersive.
A cluttered and overwhelming set of navigation controls, making it hard to find the feature you’re looking for.
A long and uninspiring list of games and categories.
Inconsistent styling across buttons, text and colours throughout the page.
The Solution
Removed the double or even triple stack navigation section present on the storefront with a consolidated single ‘mega menu’ style navigation that floats above the content at the top of the window.
Standardised the font hierarchy throughout the homepage so that important content like game titles, descriptions and categories are clearly identifiable.
Implemented a more modern style bento card layout which lets the games showcase their artwork in a more immersive way.
Reduced the length of the fixed content on the page, making space for an infinite scroll function to showcase games similar to platforms like Pinterest.
