NICK NICK NICK FIRE

"Here's the first of the day fellas. To ol' D.H. Lawrence."Jack Nicholson in a classic scene from “Easy Rider” (1969) with Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper.

Comments from Peter Fonda for the fiftieth anniversary of Easy Riders :

" In Taos, New Mexico, I couldn't stop coughing. I wasn't too worried, but Paul Lewis, the production manager, insisted that I go to the doctor, who diagnosed me with bronchopneumonia. Something really serious, which can be deadly! I had to rush to the hospital, I spent several days there, and the filming continued without me. When I came back, we filmed the scene in front of the police station, where Jack Nicholson takes out his bottle of whiskey and drinks to D. H. Lawrence's health. I ask him: “Jack, where did you get that from?” And he explains to me that during my stay in the hospital, he and Dennis went to take acid at the grave of D. H. Lawrence! "Nice guys! I'm on the verge of death and you're having a good time." I pretended to scold him, and he really felt guilty! But how can you blame Jack? He was beaming on this shoot. He was magnificent. After ten years of being a mad cow, he was finally allowed to express himself as an actor. It was a rebirth for him."
