Minnesota State Flag Redesign Option 1
This direction for the Minnesota State Flag project is focused on the symbolism of Minnesota and the people who first lived here. I went to the Minnesota History Center to get hands-on with Minnesota’s historical roots.
Symbolism:
+ Minnesota White Wildflower: Wildflowers have long been used as symbols to celebrate those we have lost. Today we remember lost loved ones and support the millions of individuals impacted over the last three years of the Covid-19 pandemic.
+ Sioux Star: represents honor and generosity.
+ Pine Forest: the majestic Western White Pine Tree is a symbol of peace for Native Americans
+ 8 Pointed Star: "L’Étoile du Nord" (The Star of the North) is used throughout the architecture of the State Capital and the Minnesota History Center. The star also looks like 4 linked “M”s.
My exploration started with the geometry found in the 8 pointed star. By exploring the design of the negative space, I discovered 8 white pines and a Minnesota white wildflower. The flag design is simple and bold. Packed with deep rooted meaning and history, this is a design I feel will stand the test of time.
