Plan-It: Design Challenge

Hello everyone,

I recently took on the "Plan-It" design challenge and I'm excited to share my design approach with you.

About the Project πŸš€

The "Plan-It" digital resource planning system is designed to efficiently manage and allocate skilled manpower and equipment for construction and infrastructure projects at "Manpower Inc."

The Goal 🎯

The goal of the challenge was to develop an intuitive and user-friendly system that effectively manages human resources, equipment, assignments, and work orders for Project Managers, HR Staff, and Fieldworkers.

The project encompasses:

  • Key Features and Requirements Breakdown

  • User Personas

  • User Types and Hierarchy

  • Key User Journeys

  • Information Architecture

  • Low-Fidelity Wireframes (Web and Mobile)

  • High-Fidelity Wireframes (Web and Mobile)

  • Component Library

A summary from the brief....

Key Project Requirements:

  • Resource Allocation: Project managers should effortlessly allocate the right people or teams and equipment to specific projects and tasks. They need to easily check resource availability and make seamless assignments.

  • Resource Availability: HR staff must monitor worker and equipment availability, manage leaves, and track maintenance schedules.

  • Field Workers: Field workers need a simplified interface to view their assignments, equipment, report issues, and log work hours.

  • Equipment Tracking: The system must track equipment condition and maintenance history, issuing alerts when maintenance is due.

  • Work Orders: Project managers should create, manage, and allocate resources for work orders connected to projects and customers.

Design Requirements:

  • User Roles: Identify and cater to different user roles, such as project managers and HR staff.

  • Component-Based Design: Ensure consistency and efficiency with a component-based design approach. Consider using a Figma design system for pre-built components and styles.

  • Assignment Management: Create a system for project managers to link field workers or teams to specific assignments.

  • Work Hour Tracking: Implement a feature for field workers to log their work hours.

  • Visualizations: Use visual aids like Gantt charts and resource calendars for easy resource allocation and availability understanding.

  • Design System: Decide whether to use a pre-built Figma design system or create a custom one for "Plan-It" and "Manpower Inc." Ensure consistency in UI elements, typography, colors, and interactions.

Deliverables:

  • Ideation Deck: Present an ideation deck explaining your design choices and how they meet the user needs and journeys.

  • Wireframes or Mockups: Provide wireframes or mockups for one key user journey, illustrating user flow and interactions.

  • High-Fidelity Design and Components: Develop a high-fidelity design for one screen from your wireframes/mockups, showcasing visual details including colors, typography, and imagery.
