Tanning beds and Tattoos

This is my recent work for creating infographics for a project.

Here are some key points.

Using tanning beds can lead to the gradual fading of your tattoos over time, as the intense UV rays break down the ink pigment beneath your skin. However, there are measures you can take to reduce the likelihood of this happening.

  1. Apply Sunscreen: Prior to sun exposure, it's crucial to apply a broad-spectrum SPF to your entire body. Pay special attention to gently apply sunscreen over your tattoos before sunbathing. Always opt for sunscreen with an SPF rating of 30 or higher.

  2. Protect Your Tattoo: It might sound unconventional, but there are protective garments available to shield your tattoos from UV exposure, even when using tanning beds. For example, if you have a full sleeve tattoo, you can wear protective clothing with built-in UV protection to safeguard your ink and extend the longevity of your artwork.

  3. Explore Safer Alternatives: There are healthier and safer alternatives to tanning beds that can help you achieve a sun-kissed look without compromising your tattoos.

  4. Spray Tans: After your tattoo has fully healed, typically after a month or longer, consider using spray tans as a safe way to achieve a bronzed complexion. This method allows you to attain a beautiful, natural-looking tan without exposing your skin to harmful UV rays. Many modern spray tans also contain moisturizing components that promote skin health. Keep in mind that a spray tan might temporarily darken the appearance of your tattoos upon application, but this effect is not permanent and is less damaging than sun exposure.

    b. Self Tanner: If you're uncomfortable with getting a spray tan at a salon, there are various self-tanning products available for at-home use. Once again, it's essential to use these products only after your tattoo has fully healed. Self-tanner products typically come in the form of creams or foams containing dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which interacts with dead skin cells, darkening them when applied. This method can help you achieve a sun-kissed look while preserving your tattoos.
