Portraits
Much like figure drawing portraiture is something very important to me. The act of capturing likeness feels like attaining some kind of deeper, less measurable understanding of the subject. All art is the act of probing the subject with the intention of a deeper understanding. This is most true with the one symbol that every living person links to the concept of one’s identity: the human face. Charcoal, chalk pastel, graphite and pencil may be these wonderfully sculptural tools that help one navigate the crevasses, slopes and ledges that make up the face but it is a persistent eye that helps the artist capture someone’s personality. I drew each of these with the hope that I would achieve just that.
