Walpole Island Wild - Logo Design

OBJECTIVE

To design a new logo for the Walpole Island Wild Junior hockey team. The team is looking for a logo that represents the team’s spirit, energy on the ice, and Walpole Island.

PROCESS

I first started off by researching about the history of Walpole Island and looking at the Walpole Island First Nation’s website. As I wanted to incorporate elements to tie in the environment and history of Walpole Island. I took inspiration from the Anishinaabemowin name for Walpole Island, Bkejwanong, meaning “where the waters divide”. I used that to create a centrepiece of a forest and water dividing

the two. I also took inspiration from the Bkejwanong Territory logo and the council of the three fires by adding a subtle design feature where the 3 points of the “W” icon intersect with the tree outline to

represent the 3 fires, Another subtle feature that I included in the design is that the tree outline looks like an animals paw.

For the design style, I went with a simple and modern look as I felt it would be more appealing and easier to identify with, rather than a more complicated logo design that had more details to it. I wanted to keep it sharp and clean with a strong emphasis on the centre piece as this would be the

main feature of the logo. I created a unique “W” icon so that it would help establish a brand identity for the team with its own characteristics rather than having it look like other letter forms.
