Litter Sweep UI Design

Introduction

It started in 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and government-imposed curfews, captivating videos emerged, revealing the positive impact of reduced human activity on the environment. Inspired by the potential for change, a strong desire to contribute to a greener Earth drove the inception of a groundbreaking project focused on tackling litter pollution and nurturing a sense of community responsibility. This case study explores the process undertaken to research and design an innovative community litter reporting app, aiming to uncover residents' and governments' perspectives on litter, understand the depth of the litter issue, evaluate existing efforts to combat it, and identify areas for improvement.

Approach

I took a deep dive into this topic including performing the necessary secondary research and primary research to understand the overall subject of litter and its affect on the environment, particularly living in Los Angeles. My research plan involved desk research and virtual interviews with local residents that lived in Los Angeles. From Discovery to Insights!

Visual Design

After all of my research was completed, insights were gather and the problem was defined:

Despite various local initiatives, litter continues to mar our streets, parks, and public spaces, negatively impacting the environment and quality of life for residents. How might we improve litter reporting processes and engage the community effectively?

After some rounds of ideation and brainstorming, it was time to get to the wireframing, creating the style guide, and designing the high-fidelity screens.
