female cycle tracking app: a case study
This is the capstone project that I have developed over the course of 3 weeks as a part of Product Design Course at Dribble. I chose an open brief and defined the problem and constraints myself.
Design Process:
market research and analysis ->
user interviews & research ->
wire framing ->
ideation ->
prototype testing ->
iteration and refining the design.
Competitors & User Research
20 female user participants reached out to me after publishing a 7 open-ended questions survey on my social media page. Here are some key findings.
Methods used (as reported by users) to track their menstrual cycle:
Flo (45%)
MyCycle (15%)
PC (Period Tracker) (10%)
P tracker (5%)
Clue (5%)
Apple Health (5%)
Calendar, notes or other (15%)
First Design Iteration
Branding & Final Prototypes
The app's color scheme was chosen to be sage green for several reasons. The connection between sage green and femininity lies in the subtle and calming qualities of this muted green hue. Sage is often associated with natural elements, such as leaves and plants, which are traditionally linked to femininity and nurturing.
This choice of color creates a balance between a sense of tranquillity and elegance. The combination of sage and neutral beige in the color scheme aims to create a visually appealing and engaging interface while highlighting important elements and calls to action within the app using the accent hues of bright yellow and red.
The name Grace was chosen for the app because it reflects the core values of the application. The name is simple, timeless and easy to remember.

Takeaways & Next Steps
💭 What I have learnt:
This was the first time I worked on an open brief with a tight deadline. Although I felt overwhelmed at first, I managed to ration my time and break down the design process into mini-tasks.
📈 Next steps:
This app validated my hypothesis that there are existing female users of menstrual cycling apps that intrigued to know more about their hormonal health. I am looking forward to:
🌱 Step 1
Conducting more in-depth user research to determine the user demographic that has purchased menstrual cycling app memberships because they want deeper insights into their health and hence build an MVP.
🌱🌱 Step 2
Refining the design and expanding the app’s content.
