Guides Illustration
I have a good friend called Mike Gwyther, and he's in an awesome band called The Ramps. He asked me to direct the video for a new single called 'Guides'. The song was written from the perspective of a would-be voyeur, that actually turns out to be a protector. We had a storyboard concept written around the idea of little red riding hood and the wolf. Riding hood in this instance would be a runaway girl, and the wolf would eventually reveal himself to be her father.
We had some nice live-action/animation crossover scenes happening - and I decided to do some painting to get a feel for the look we wanted. I ended up two pieces that I took into different directions, one I wanted a haunted, dirty feel to come through, but for the girl to retain a soft innocence. The other was a collage of some of the ideas we had for the animation. A montage of entering the woods, a place that is dark and confusing, bleeding out into handwriting. This relates to one of the central scenes for the video where the girl wrote letters that she never sent. I liked this idea of her thoughts and feelings never finding their recipient.
