Polesatr 3 HMI concept
I designed a concept interface for the Polestar car head unit. In this post, I will explain the details of the concept.
First, I positioned a significant portion of the controls along the left border of the screen. I know from experience designing interfaces for cars that it is most convenient for the driver to interact with the controls located on the border of the screen. The driver has to concentrate on the road, so often uses peripheral vision when looking for the right button on the screen. The tactile contact of the edge of the screen helps the user to find the desired element faster. Also, the new layout helps avoid unnecessary nesting of rows of controls.
It is impossible to fit all the elements along the edges, so there is a second row of buttons from the bottom edge. To improve the interaction with this row, I increased their target size.
UI customization was announced in the Polestar 3 presentation. The video shows a possible realization of this feature.
I also did a little restyling of the interface. It mainly concerns the icons. I applied a unified style, more geometric than in the original. In my opinion, this approach corresponds well with the minimalistic style of the company.
Minor changes have been made to small details. Such as less accent on widget names and more accent on the highlighted item in the bottom bar.
