REPZ

Intro

As a frequent gym goer I needed a way to track my lifts in order to see my progress over time and up the weight once I reach a certain rep goal. Before this I was tracking my lifts using the notes app on android but soon realize it didn't meet some of my needs.

This is how REPZ was born.

Project goals

  • Create an app to track sets and reps for each workout

  • Include a rest timer countdown

  • Graph view of progress

  • Minimal and efficient (less taps)

  • Try to automate repetitive task

  • Make it easy to enter in rep count

User research

Since I am the user, it was clear what my goals and needs were. The hard part was trying to break down certain steps that I did in the gym to track my progress with the notes app and understand where the pain points were in the process.

User flow

Wireframes

In this stage I did a bunch of exploration playing with the layout, hierarchy and different ways to present the content.

Typography

With this I knew I wanted a font that had thick slabs, tall, and condense. These were the characteristic that would give the app a strong and powerful feel. It was also important to test the font out on the numbers.

Color

For the colors I wanted a minimal palette and was inspired by Greek statues and pottery design since it displays strength and power.

Icons

With the icons I had a hard time finding an existing theme that would fit the look and feel of this app so I created one. I pulled out the stem of the capital K and use it as building blocks for other icons.

Design

For the design I went with a very specific look and feel. I needed the app to feel heavy and strong and also simple enough so that it feels fluid to use with minimal distractions.

Takeaways

Few things that I learn from this project and problems face are...

  • When to use the X navigation vs back arrow

  • Since I was the user, I really had to think deeply on what matters when creating this app. There were times when I was just including way too many options that was far from the initial goals

  • Creating an icon set using the font as a base
