Acadia National Park

Designed to tell the story of Acadia National Park thru a collage base approach. The design makes use of a strong sense of symmetry & hierarchy.

Delving into Acadia NP

In order to do background research for this project, I used Wikipedia to orient my self. Using Wiki helps me to pick out the major themes and motifs for such a project.

Motifs

• Woodrow Wilson declared Acadia a National Park in 1919. I paired a celebratory bunch of flowers with a vintage stamp of President Wilson to create a striking pairing.

• The fox and the tree pattern in the bottom right corner represent the diverse wildlife of the park and the unique mix of flora and fauna.

• The illustration of a Native American paired with a moose represents the first inhabitants of the area and the timeless nature of the park.

• The central image is of Bass Harbor Head Light paired with a crashing wave that represents the huge storms that have battered the coastline over the years.

Design Insight

While crafting these posters I had several goals.

1. Make use of all types of formats and mediums such as photos, illustrations, and vector based art.

2. Use a mathematical approach to layout with a strong sense of symmetry.

3. Explore the depths of clipping masks in Adobe Illustrator

4. Develop a new way to incorperate low quality google images into the collage.

In order to incorporate lower quality web sized pictures into this illustration I used a unique preparation method which included "chiseling" the image in Illustrator with layered opacity to give them a sense of texture. For example notice the clouds above the lighthouse in the main image?
