It loads two images first, between 640 and 2560px wide depending on the viewport size, then lazy loads the following slides beneath the current one so the user never experiences a loading image.

It allows for dozens of high-resolution images to be cycled through while minimizing bandwidth cost for users on mobile or slow connections.
