Art Deco in Hawaii - Commercial Art
Technology innovations helped people move across the ocean and Hawaii was no exception. Hawaii based Matson Navigation Company joined in serving the Hawaiian Islands by the Los Angeles Steamship Company (Art Deco Hawaii, p 28). S.S. Malolo was a one of luxury ships that Matson Navigation Company built in 1910s and 1920s. In 1927, November, to commemorate Malolo's voyage, The Royal Hawaiian Hotel (A.K.A. Pink Hotel) held the special dinner event and it inspired me to create this illustration. (Unfortunately, Malolo's first voyage delayed due to technical issue.)
