Viola's Disguise
Jenni Appleby, "Viola's Disguise," November 2022, Digital, 33" x 14"
Inspired by Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, this piece explores Viola's search for identity as she disguises herself as a man. Viola was illustrated in purple & pink to represent femininity. Cesario (Viola's male alter ego) was illustrated in blue to represent masculinity. Every difference between the illustrations of Viola and Cesario is something that an actor playing this role could have changed about their appearance through simple costuming and makeup.
