Shengnu: Leftover Women

Inspired by the pressure against unmarried Chinese women

As the young girl curiously reaches out to read the posters on the umbrella, she unknowingly learns about the future pressures she must endure.

剩女 Sheng Nu (Leftover Women) is a derogatory term that describes unmarried women over 25. Women in China are pressured to marry early and told they would never find true happiness without children and marriage. Parents advertise their children to marry them off in marriage markets, and those flyers are sometimes placed on top of umbrellas.
