Under Columbia University, The Center for Complicated Grief is a research center that helps people who are suffering with prolonged, complicated grief.

In the initial concepts (see 'unused marks' attachment) an early attempt was a modern monogram of Complicated Grief (CG), giving it a stern, institutional feel. On the opposite side, an alternative attempt was to illustrate a person grieving. This has an emphatic, human-like quality. Since their tag, "Grief is a form of love," plays an important role, the hands subtly form a heart shape. Also riffing on the idea of heart, another concept had people connecting together to heal communally.

The third concept was chosen; however, since the heads were not easy to identify, they were omitted. The result was a simplified visual mark having hearts weaved together. Also, at first, we had explored the soft color palettes; however, they didn't capture the seriousness of the subject. Instead a darker, bolder color was selected.
