In the last couple of years, a design system has become the key to a growing any software, serving as a source of truth for the entire product org; managers, engineers and designers. It maintains pattern and visual consistencies with new parts being added and built, but most importantly, it allows you to only have to build once. Without it, engineers rebuild and re-test components over and over again, which costs time (also, money). It also allows designers to focus their time more on UX rather than the pretty visuals, which is more important.
