Macedonia // Coat of Arms Redesign
The aim of this exercise was to create a heraldic achievement for the Republic of Macedonia that is grounded in heraldic tradition.
Currently, the state emblem is a holdover from the former Yugoslav era, and is the only one remaining out of the 6 former member states.
Owing to the absence of a Macedonian state during medieval times all heraldic achievements presented are "land" arms, or more correctly, attributed arms, which are given retroactively by heralds.
The lion rampant is presented in gold on a red shield, keeping it consistent with the majority of the attributed arms recorded. A slight divergence here can be seen in the crown which is changed into a mural crown, which is a civic crown and does not signify nor represent any royal title, as Macedonia is a republic and did not have a royal family during the duration of the heraldic period.
In lieu of classical supporters, the coat of arms is encircled by an oak wreath. The wreath shows two branches of stylized leaves of the Macedonian oak (Quercus trojana), joined by a golden ribbon.
