Homeless animal project

The Challenge

Tens of thousands of cats and dogs live in Ukrainian animal shelters. In general, hungry four-legged friends, who roam the streets of our cities, have no more roof over their heads. The exact total number of Ukrainian homeless animals is currently unknown, homeless and domestic animals are counted only in some cities, but in 2017, according to the Washington Post, there were about 7.5 million homeless cats and dogs in Ukraine. We are in the top ten among the world's countries in terms of the largest number of animals, including homeless ones.

The fate of stray animals is a test of the maturity of each country. And, as those who take care of animals say, Ukraine has almost failed this test.

Many shelters take care of animals and put them in good hands. However, finding homeless animals, many people do not know what to do. It is not always possible to take care of homeless animals. Active users of social networks post about looking for a home for animals. But they are limited by the number of friends on the social network. And what to do to those people who have a small number of friends on social networks or if a person does not use them at all? Only some people have the time and motivation to find the nearest shelter. So what to do to people who are limited in resources?

The goal is to create a mobile application that will unite people who found homeless animals and want to give them in good hands with those people who are looking for a new four-legged friend.

Customer Insights

To get the research phase started, we made a survey that we shared across social media channels. We got 80 responders. We received such interesting insights from the respondents:

All respondents recognize issues with homeless animals. To the question: How did you help the homeless animals you found on the street? 50% of respondents said they did not have time to help, 8% of respondents said that they took home and live with a new four-legged friend, 10% of respondents said they gave the homeless animals to acquaintances/friends/relatives, 27% of respondents said they gave food to the homeless animals, 5% of respondents said that they gave homeless animals to shelters.

75% of respondents said they do not know where the shelter for dogs and cats is in their city.

95% of respondents consider the large number of homeless animals in Ukraine to be a problem.

To solve the problem of homeless animals in Ukraine, respondents offered their answers, the most popular opinions were:

1)Sterilization of homeless animals or the creation of even more state-funded shelters is currently lacking.

2)More shelter for homeless animals, and food aid for those who keep such shelters.

3)Increase liability for owners who discard animals.

4)Inform the public about the possibility to help.

Personas

What problems do we cover?

By creating a mobile application, we want to become a platform where people can: inform shelters and people that they have found homeless animals, can look for animals and give them a new home, find their pets that have escaped or got lost, and communicate with like-minded people.
