TESS - An app for logging gastrointestinal disorders

TESS Screens

TESS IS A USEFUL AND ENGAGING APP TO HELP THOSE EXPERIENCED AND NEWLY DIAGNOSED WITH GI DISORDERS MANAGE THEIR HEALTH.

Mood Screener

Tess is designed to make logging information about gastrointestinal health a bit less...painful. Many people feel gastro issues are tough to discuss with their physician so the goal was to have an effective, yet entertaining way to track and communicate information.

Mood Screens

Research showed that existing apps were limited to certain GI disorders and lacked the flexibility to accommodate the wide of GI disorders and the ability to log all data in one app.

Users (including myself) were frustrated with having to use several apps to meet their comprehensive logging needs.

Food Screens

With TESS, users can log important information about their health, view and analyze their data, and share information with their healthcare provider in a single app.

Poop Screens

Each entry the user makes in any area of the app is a data point that the user can include in any report they wish to generate.

Users can share the result report with their physician, use the information to find patterns, and triggers, or gain control over their disorder.

Questions I asked myself through the design process included:

  • How do I limit the number of clicks to accomplish a flow?

  • Would an auto-scroll feature to transition between sections be useful?

  • Drop-downs? Tiles? Light colors? Dark colors? Buttons?

  • How can I make the logging process as painless and discreet as possible?

Here's a sample flow for logging food.

I chose soft tones for the benefit of their calming nature. I thought that color-coding the app categories would be beneficial to users with low literacy/cognitive ability.

When I initially designed the app I was concerned that I would be tempted to include more than what was necessary for an MVP. Many usability testers commented that they would use the app immediately if they could.  I found this to be very encouraging, especially when thinking of how many people this app would help.
