MYBUS - Local Public Transportation App

AN APPLICATION TO SOLVE A MIDWESTERN CITY'S TRANSPORTATION DILEMMA.

MYBUS key screens

I was asked to find a solution to 3 core problems:

  1. Ensure that all riders can tell how much time they have to get to the Washington & State bus stop before the bus they need arrives at that stop.

  2. Ensure that any rider can tell when each of the buses arrives at the Washington & State bus stop.

  3. Allow riders to select one of seven bus lines to see a list of future bus arrival times at the Washington & State bus stop.

MYBUS additional screens

Phoebe must take multiple buses to complete her daily journey, it was critical that Phoebe be able to easily tell which bus is approaching her stop.

Let's take a look at Phoebe.

Phoebe Persona

Comprehensive research was conducted to determine the best way to address the users’ needs. The plan included a session guide, materials list, interview script, and consent forms (English, Spanish, Juvenile) were included.

Distance from stop

Complex user flows were refined into smoother, simpler solutions.  I wanted to make sure I could make it as easy and efficient as possible for riders like Phoebe to get the information they needed.

MYBUS Flow

The app needed to be very easy for riders to understand and use. The solution included how a bus can be located by tapping the route number. Destination taps show the rider the bus’s location on the map. Map markers show riders their location on the map which helps the user plan their timeline.

Softer colors were used in the hi-fidelity frames that complied with accessibility guidelines.

An important lesson I learned throughout this project was that less is more.  It was easy to be absorbed into a spiraling vortex of excessive features that are unrelated to the MVP solution. Not having enough features will frustrate and underwhelm users and bloating an app will produce the same results.
