The museum was founded in 1908, but over the following years it was closed many times due to the outbreak of World War I and World War II, during which the museum was practically completely destroyed, but the institution was not liquidated and after many years of renovation, the museum in Bolesławiec was opened on December 27, 1953. The history of Bolesławiec since the Middle Ages is closely related to the pottery craft. The oldest pottery in the museum dates back to around the 13th century. Most of the pottery from this period were very simple, without decorations and brown in color. The increase in artistic value dates back to around the 16th and 17th centuries, when ceramic techniques developed significantly. In this time products from Bolesławiec gained recognition and popularity throughout Europe. Around 1882, a stamp decoration appeared in Bolesławiec, which became a symbol of contemporary local ceramics.
