Welcome to Centralia Pennsylvania

Centralia is a borough in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. Its population has dwindled from over 1,000 residents in 1981 to 7 in 2013 as a result of the Centralia mine fire that has been burning beneath the borough since 1962. There is some disagreement over the specific event which triggered the fire.

"May 27th, 1962: A coal fire erupts beneath Centralia, Pennsylvania. It will continue to burn for approximately 250 years. Some argue the subterranean inferno was triggered by errant discarding of hot ash. Others point to Centralia's ignorance of God."
