Sending Songs and Chatting in Spotify - A Concept Study

Spotify tried out a chat feature in 2017 that failed–but what if they tried again? I explored the possibilities of Spotify if we opened a path for users to share their music and thoughts on the app.

Through user research I found that first of all, no one has tried and true way of sharing music they're loyal to, and second of all, would love to be able to share their music with their friends on Spotify!

With research to back up my decision to add social features to Spotify, I prototyped a version of the app with the following added features:

  • Sending a song to a friend (can be the one you're listening to or one that you're not, or even a whole playlist/album)

  • Time Stamping - select a spot of the song you want your friend to start listening to your sent song at

  • Sound Stickers - like a GIF but just iconic snippets of songs

  • Optional Silent Experience - Don't ruin the user experience with unwanted sounds! Sound Stickers won't play unless tapped on and displays lyrics and sent songs don't play unless you tap play
