Montana State Flag Concept

This is a concept for the Montana state flag. The existing flag is one of several state flags consisting of a solid background color and a state seal not designed to be seen on a flag with the name Montana included above the symbol. This flag is commonly rated one of the worst state flags in the union.

So this concept keeps it simple with a stylized bison skull split in two. The bison used to roam the entire state of Montana before being hunted to near extinction.
The bison represents many things including abundance, strength and stability, which are traits of this great state. The bison is also sacred to many of the Native American nations including the main nations that reside in Montana to this day.

The gold and silver halves of the skull represent the mining industry witch brought so many to our state and pays homage to the existing flag with the Spanish phrase “oro y plata” that means “gold and silver.”

The vast one color background represents the “big sky” and the jagged split between the skull halves represent the great Missouri river that runs through the state.
