Luxembourg Roude Iesel

The people of Luxembourg have the reputation for being a bit stubborn and not liking change. This is a country whose national motto is “Mir wëlle bleiwe wat mir sinn” (We want to remain what we are).

There was a referendum on June 7, 2015, and the outcome was an overwhelming NO. Of the questions asked in the referendum the most contentious one was whether non-nationals should be granted the right to vote. Given the high proportion of non-nationals who reside in Luxembourg, this means that about 45% of the residents are disenfranchised.

The Luxembourg flag consists of three horizontal stripes, red, white and blue. There is an alternative, the ensign, used for river, sea shipping, and aviation, which is ten white and blue stripes that serve as the field for a red lion with a yellow tongue, claws and crown. Given the result of the referendum, and the Donkey-like stubbornness of the voters to institute change, here is my proposal for a new flag for Luxembourg: the ensign, with a donkey instead of the lion.
