Slack UI concept - just for fun :)

Slack is a wonderful tool made for better team communication that I personally love using. If you’ve never checked these guys out, I highly recommend you do: www.slack.com.

This design was just a personal project for me to see a tool I use almost every day in a different light. I’ve always been a huge fan of their logo and branding, which has a lot of color and personality in it – and I wanted to create a version that carried over that personality into the tool itself. Their current UI does a great job of getting out of the way of the content your eye needs to see first, but I wanted to see if a more colorful version that shows their branding more could accomplish the same thing.

In addition to updating the colors and a lot of the UI, I also added more functionality to the left menu by letting it collapse into a smaller and less distracting position on the page. To support this functionality, I added two new buttons in the lower portion of the menu.

I also want to give a shoutout to @Piotr Kwiatkowski, who created some of the iconography used in the comps. Please check out his page, where you can find the whole set of icons he made.

Real sizes of the comps attached.
