Cover Art Series: Cloth

I tired breaking away from my typical art style for this one. This cover art in particular is not associated with any songs yet, but I thought it would be a cool proof of concept. I got the idea for this piece after playing around with Midjourney V4, which at the time had just released. I had heard that the image-to-image algorithm was a lot better than it's previous iteration, so I had to try it out. I took an old picture of myself from my university days and fed it into Midjourney. I played around with different material prompts; paper, plastic, metal, and I finally stumbled upon an interesting image of myself wrapped in cloth. I ended up designing the whole piece around the color scheme of this image and I thought it turned out kind of cool!

Technique

My friend took the original picture of me a while back. I ended up retouching the image and using it as cover art for a single that I made called "Red Lights Blue Nights", which you can find here. I took the cover art and fed it into Midjourney V4, and through some prompting ended up with the central image.

The typography was created by warping the word "CLOTH", typed in IBM Plex Mono, in Inkscape. I imported the svg data into Figma and created two instances; a solid version (foreground), and a stroke version (background). The gradient used to color the svgs comes from my own "Galaxy Gradient" pack. The dark blue vignette was created in Figma, and overlayed over that is an edited version of a texture from a DESIGNSYNDROME texture pack.
