UI redesign for Travel Recommendations App
A new look for friend-to-friend recommendations app, Rove.
The Brief
As a lean start up, Rove was beautifully created with the main focus on functionally. I joined the team later to update their user interface and give the brand an elevated look.
User flow
I started mapping out their existing user flows to ease changes and dive deep into the mind of the user and their experience.
Since joining the team we’ve also been playing around with potential future features and creating low fidelity wireframes.
Visual Design
The colour palette I received was active and bright. My challenge was to add purpose to the colours. Using accents of the palette in images, illustrations, and branding details but one main colour as the primary blue for branding, buttons and other elements.
Changes
The overall look was adjusted to a friendly, animated and personalised feel, giving Rove a clean but fun personality. Taking a look at some changes made to the original UI:
Final Screens
The overall look was adjusted to a friendly, animated and personalised feel with a distinct blue accent colour.
Prototype
We tested the new look and feel with some current users who all responded really positively to the changes. Users expressed that it “feels cohesive", "easy to use", "intuitive and fun to use”. The use of an accent colour has also allowed users to find the Rove Icon easier. Users completed tasks to ‘add a recommendation’, ‘find friends’ and search for a recommendation’ and were all able to do so while being moderated.
Outcome + Results
Rove will be an ongoing project to introduce new features and update the app, but I have learnt so much already and very appreciative to be apart of this talented team. My learnings include really listen to the client but also not be afraid to stick to my guns and go for bold changes. The client had great ideas and navigating this dynamic showed me when to voice my opinion and when to purely execute.
I look forward to what’s to come, learning and growing with this team.
Special thanks to Mike for trusting me with his start up.
