Test Cloud - RubberHose Rig

Experimenting with a new type of rigging system that takes much of the complexity out of character animation. Place shoulder and hand controllers (or hip and foot), define the arm/leg length and the bend happens automatically. No parenting to fight against, no IK chains to get confused, no precomps to get gross if you scale up or change art style.

NOTE: the limb is rendered as a stroke on a single path. This is good for some things and really rough for others. Stroke weight is consistant, and but because it's a single path you can duplicate, trim and re-style the stroke. Sleeves were built using this feature.

The same system was used for the fingers in this.
