Old Slavs believed that swallows are “blessed” birds.

Killing one or destroying its nest was - and in some places still is - believed to be a terrible sin that results in the perpetrator being cursed

Because of this, swallows were omnipresent in the Balkans. There wasn’t a house or shed without a swallow’s nest. In the spring, people would wait for their swallows to come back. If they wouldn’t, it was considered a bad omen.
