When you walk into a physical store to enquire about a product and the attendant says it’s out-of-stock, they don’t just let you leave the store. They try to further engage you by incentivizing you to buy another product or give you a tentative period for when your preferred product would be back in stock - at the cost of a longer delivery time.

So, the idea is to bring that scenario to online shopping where it’s left for people to decide whether or not they want to bear the wait time for an out-of-stock item; as opposed to storming out of the store (read: website).
