Design By Numbers (1999)

This is from the 90s, back when I thought it was important to teach computation to more artists and designers. Design By Numbers (DBN) was a simple programming system for drawing in a 101 x 101 pixel space (x and y varied from 0 to 100) in only black and white (gray values varied from 0 to 100). I wrote the first version in Java, but it was really bad. The brilliant Tom White wrote the second version. Then Ben Fry wrote the third version in a way that only he could -- which then became the final version; and Casey Reas designed the "courseware" component around which DBN was wrapped. Ben and Casey went on to make Processing (http://processing.org) and the rest is history ...

Ah, just found an old video of it running: https://vimeo.com/72611093
