Bark!

Pet Care That Feels Like Home

Bark! connects pet parents to pet service providers in their area. Pet parents need services that are convenient, flexible, and most importantly trustworthy. The goal of this app is to help make the searching and scheduling process easier for owners so that they can spend more time focusing on the important things.

My Role - Product Designer

User Research, UI/UXDesign, Prototyping, User Testing

Tools Used: Figma, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe After Effects

Research

For this project I utilized competitive research and conducted user interviews to create a user persona.

Pros and Cons for Bark App Market Research

The biggest takeaway from user interviews was that they needed to be able to trust their walker. The pet parents had limited time and needed flexible service times to fit into their changing schedules and to know their pet was in good hands. With this information I created my user persona for this app.

User Flow & Wireframes

I wanted to make sure that each step from signing up to booking a service walked the user through the process to make it simple to use even if long periods of time passed between using services. I made sure to include a results page since trust was the number one concern from user interviews. This allows the control to be with the user to choose who they want to take care of their pet instead of someone being assigned to them at random.

Visual Design

Bark!'s visual design is based around simplicity and comfort. Utilizing a limited color palette of greens and orange and clean font styles. I used photos instead of illustrations to help create a sense of trust using real people and their pets enjoying themselves and choosing images that complimented the color scheme.

The layout is minimalist and utilizes large CTA's and limited options to help guide the user and limit information on each page as to not overwhelm users as they navigate through their services.

Prototype

This prototype walks through the flow of setting up your account and booking your first walk.

User Testing

I created a test script that asked users to go through the onboarding experience and to book their first service.

Users were a mix of male and female between the ages of 29-60 with and without pets and varying levels of experience with technology.

All users were able to complete tasks with no issues, each provided feedback for improvement on the experience.

User Testing Updates

Based off of user comments and feedback during the testing sessions I updated key areas of the app to improve UX feedback as well as feature enhancements.

Final Thoughts

I had a lot of fun creating this app and enjoyed recruiting for user research and testing. What I learned from this experience was to start testing in the wireframe stage so that I can get user feedback sooner and can have time for multiple rounds of feedback.

Next steps:

  • Add Messaging Feature

  • Create onboarding and homepage for dog walkers

  • Create user calendar

  • User testing of new & existing features
