Slack Concept - Deep Work Mode

Slack is used by 10 million people a day to collaborate with colleagues. For many of us, Slack is a noisy place where we can easily lose focus.

The University of California and Humboldt University found that workers can lose up to 23 minutes per task every time they are interrupted.

Slack allows you to disable notifications and set your status as away, but is that all Slack can do to put us on the right path towards deeper states of focus?

It's with this idea in mind that I propose a new Slack feature: deep work mode.

Turning deep work mode "on"

Huddles currently have a very prominent place in Slack's UI. I argue that such a place could be given to turning "on" deep work mode.

The easier it is to disconnect from Slack, the closer we are to deeper concentration.

Blocking interface while mode is "on"

While deep work mode is on, all platform functionalities and notifications should be inaccessible across all devices.

Custom settings

Users could tweak how they want deep work mode to work for them. Settings could include:

  • Set status as away

  • Disable all notifications

  • Block workspace

  • Apply to all workspaces

Achieving deep work is not only fundamental to our productivity but essential to our well-being.

What do you think of this proposed feature?

Happy designing and enjoy work! 🙌
