Thistlefoot
After reading Thistlefoot by GennaRose Nethercott, I wanted to design a book jacket to summarize my experience reading the novel. Thistlefoot is an enrapturing story about family, and generational stories told through oral storytelling. It examines the nature of folklore and healing generational trauma. It's a beautiful retelling of the lore surrounding Baba Yaga, the power of stories and storytellers. Inspired by the use of shadow imagery and the folklore surrounding Baba Yaga in the novel, I wanted to utilize negative space creating silhouettes of the chicken legs that carry Baba Yaga's house. I embraced the roughness and restless nature of Thistlefoot while honoring Ukrainian embroidery with the delicate flowers on the spine. I hope my work inspires you to read Thistlefoot and let yourself be whisked away.Â
