In other words, it “circumnavigates” the tragic, just as Hamlet “circumnavigates” his duty to revenge by ”playing,” and in so doing produces all kinds of doublings between the playful and tragic (the play within the play, the death of Dyonisus). The play evokes, rearranges, shifts, and deepens the tragic, and thus participates in it.
