I am Shoaib Prasad and I work at Zomato as a Senior Product Designer. I love building delightful customer centric experiences.

My skill set includes design thinking, research and visual design with a relentless focus on our end customers. I am excited to share my design process for creating the Live Activity Widget for the Zomato app

What are Live Activities?

A Live Activity displays up-to-date information from your app, allowing people to view the progress of events or tasks at a glance.

Live Activities help people keep track of tasks and events that they care about, offering persistent locations for displaying information that updates frequently. For example, a food delivery app could display the time remaining until a food order arrives, or a sports app can display the score for an ongoing game.

At Zomato, our goal is to make the ordering experience seamless and delightful for customers. On an average, a customer opens the Zomato app 3 - 5 times after placing an order to check their order status.

With Live Activities customers would be able to track their food order on the Lock Screen without having to open the Zomato app. 

Design behind Live Activity

1. Understanding the objective

Customers should be able to see the status of the order at a glance, which are

• Time when the order was placed  

• Real time order status with its under preparation

• Tracking the order live after it's out for delivery

2. Create a mood board

I collected references which helped me create a UI which was minimal and easy to understand

3. Wireframe

Created wireframes for each state and took feedback from my peers which helped me get clarity in making design decisions. 

4. Design

Multiple versions of the Live activity widget were designed on which I took feedback and then finally iterated the one which solved the problem of tracking the order at a glance with clear information hierarchy and order status.

5. Animation

Once the design was approved, I animated each of the flows, shared the Figma and the animation with the developers. After a development of 2 weeks the Live activity widget came to life on iOS16.
