The Cross Playing Cards ⚜️ KQJ Spades

Here the King, Queen and Jack of Spades from the CROSS Playing Cards.

I wanted to combine an elaborate engraving look with a classic court card style. It was at times quite challenging. The Bonhoeffer card was the very first thing I worked on from the deck so it really holds a special place in my heart. Here a few write-ups about the characters that are depicted on the cards:

Dietrich Bonhoeffer 1906-1945 (King of Spades) – was a German Lutheran pastor, theologian, anti-Nazi dissident, and key founding member of the Confessing Church. He was hanged by the nazis in Flossenbürg concentration camp in April 1945.

Grand Duchess Elizabeth 1864–1918 (Queen of Spades) – was a Russian duchess that became a orthodox abbess after her husband was assassinated. She sold all her possessions and founded the Convent of Saints Martha and Mary. She was brutally murdered by the Bolsheviks along with her family in July 1918.

Wang Zhiming 1907-1973 (Jack of Spades) – was a Chinese pastor who was executed in a stadium in front of more than 10,000 people in the midst of the cultural revolution. He is representative of thousands of Chinese Christians who had similar fates.
