Shim's Supplies Speakeasy
Hidden away behind a supply storefront, you’ll discover a sleek and mysterious speakeasy known as Shim’s Speakeasy. Named after the store from the 1960’s, Shim’s Surplus Supplies was originally established by Fred Shimkovsky in Oakland in 1940. Shimkovsky’s son later moved his family to Nevada and opened
the store on Sierra Street. Due to a flood the store relocated to 125 W 3rd Street where it continued to service the people of Reno. The term “speakeasy” gained wide currency during the prohibition era of the United States. So called, from the practice of speaking quietly and well about such a place in public, or when inside it, so as not to alert the police and neighbours. Nowadays, Shim’s is more than just a speakeasy and finding their “Deliveries Only” entrance is only half the fun. With no passwords required and no questions asked, their vintage interior invites both locals and newcomers alike to come as they are to experience uniquely curated libations while enjoying the swelling of music coming from their featured talent.
We were tasked with updating their brand to fit the 1920s speakeasy aesthetic. In the development and design of their website, formal style guide, event materials, social media, signage, and sales materials, we desired to pay homage to the influence of the 1920s while also effortlessly stepping into modernity all without being too extravagant in their overall brand.
