Hexagonal repeat pattern(s)

This repeat pattern is part of a collection of patterns I created in Figma last week. It uses a hexagonal repeat unit tiled on a beehive grid.

The magenta flower above is the repeat unit. It is composed of 6 identical equilateral triangles, rotated in 60-degree increments. Each of these triangles is made of two mirrored right triangles, or half petals:

The "half petal" is the true base motif of the pattern. It's the only thing that needs to be designed! The rest is just symmetry, rotation, and translation.

I created 3 versions of the base motif, which I turned into Figma components:

I then assembled them into hexagons (here's how) and tiled the hexagons onto a beehive grid. And that's it!

Here are the three assembled patterns. It's really cool to see how the shapes and colors in the base motifs come together to create something completely different at scale:

I never get tired of repeat patterns!

If you'd like to read more on the topic, here's a full step by step tutorial to recreate this pattern in Figma. It even includes a link to my file so you can download it and play with it.

Thank you for reading!

I built this pattern un Figma, using a 30-60-90 triangle as the base motif. It's a special kind of right triangle that lives in hexagons :)
