Travis Michael owner of Hard Knowledge Technologies was looking for something that was strong but also had a kick. The H and the K are represented in the mark and using a tint of the dark navy the design was able to create a grey background for the mark to reside on. This grey helps to tone down the contrasting colors of the logo.
